Tuskegee Institute, AL – The Nomination period for TUAHOF Class of 2023 has closed.

The deadline for submitting a nomination was 12/31/2023.

Nominations postmarked by December 31, 2022 will considered for the TUAHOF Class of 2023.

The Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1974 to give lasting recognition to those who have brought distinction to themselves and Tuskegee University through their achievement, commitment, support, and leadership in athletics. Since the initial class in 1974, another 26 classes of inductees have joined the Athletics Hall of Fame and there are now 305 individuals that have been honored.

TUAHOF nomination deadline approaching

Tuskegee Institute, AL – The nomination deadline for the Tuskegee University Athletic HOF Class of 2023 is  December 31, 2022.

Nominees for the Athletic Hall of Fame are accepted in one of several categories:

Athletes, which recognizes former student-athletes for demonstrated excellence during their time at Tuskegee University; continued support of Tuskegee; and professional and community accomplishments. Nominees in the Athletes category must have graduated at least ten years prior to the nomination deadline.

Coach/Administrator, which recognizes former coaches and administrators for an outstanding record as a coach and contributions to Tuskegee University Athletics.

The TUAHOF Selection Committee has limited archival material at its disposal, and those making nominations are encouraged to submit any additional documentation to support the candidacy of their nominee with nomination submission.

HOF ring presentation to highlight HOF Pre-Game activities

The HOF Class of 2022 will be presented with a HOF ring during pre-game festivities. Members of the class are Belinda Roby, Arthur L. Brown, John Armstrong, Thaddeus R. Smith, Reginald E. Harrison, Edward G. Dawson, Jr. Kenneth R. Jeffries, Cedric Pearl, Ralph S. Simpson, Jr. Reginald J. Hollins, and Justin Hannah.

The rings will be presented by HOF Board Vice Chair Otis M. McDaniel (2006), Board member Jesse B. Webb (2006) and Board Secretary James Arrington.

Also, during pre-game activities HOF members Roosevelt Jordan (2017) and Michael Crayton (2009) will participate in the coin toss as honorary HOF captains. The pre-game prayer will be done by HOF member Rev Johnny H. Flakes III (2011). The public announcer for the game will be HOF member Paul H. Carney (2003). The game will be announced on the Tuskegee Digital Network by HOF member Kenneth W. Woodard (2019) and Frank Lee.

TUAHOF kicks off Induction Weekend ’22 with scholarship awards

The Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame (TUAHOF) kicks off Induction Weekend 2022 with the awarding of two scholarship to student athletes. The recipients of the scholarships are:

Daisha Aikens – Junior Nursing major, and a member of the Golden Tigers Cheerleader Squad.

Rodricus Magee, Sr. – Sophomore Physical Education major, and a member of the Golden Tigers Football Team.

The two scholar athletes were selected from applications submitted by full time student-athletes at Tuskegee.  Congratulations!!

The TUAHOF Scholarship Program was established in 2022 to benefit student-athletes at Tuskegee University that demonstrate academic and athletic excellence.

Cleveland ‘Gip” Gipson (Class 2013) pass away

July 8, 1969 – August 4, 2022

Cleveland L. Gipson Jr, HOF Class of 2013, passed away on August 4, 2022 in Mexico where he resided.

He was the third of four children born to the union of Mrs. Fannie Gipson and Mr. Cleveland L. Gipson, Sr., of Port Arthur, Texas.

He is a 1987 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School. He developed his sports acumen in high school, particularly standing out in football earning All-District honors.

He earned a four-year athletic scholarship to Tuskegee University and received several football accolades which resulted in him being inducted into the Tuskegee University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

He became a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., in the Spring of 1991, Gamma Epsilon Chapter.

He also excelled academically and professionally, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Tuskegee University. He attended graduate school at Howard University, later earning a Master’s degrees from both Endicott College and Cambridge College.

Cleveland began his professional career as a Congressional Staffer on Capitol Hill and worked as an Educational Program Coordinator for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, before becoming an educator in the Washington, D.C., public school system.

Gipson later moved abroad and gained extensive international experience as a teacher, trainer, and principal. He was fluent in Spanish, working at the Westhill Academy in Mexico City, Mexico, McGraw Hill, Glencoe and the American School Foundation.

He is preceded in death by his father, Cleveland L. Gipson, Sr., his brother, Brooks Gipson, and sister Marla Gipson Demons.

Forever cherishing his memory is his mother, Fannie Gipson, sister Sonja Rahim, niece, Imani Rahim, and nephew Jamal M. Riggins (wife, Lee) and great-nephew, Jamal Jr., as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and beloved friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at East Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until service time.  Burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery.

Curtis Crump, Class of 2009, pass away in Michigan

Mr. Curtis Crump, age 70, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI.

Crump graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 1973.  He was a member of the baseball team at Tuskegee and was inducted into the Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. TUAHOF Bio

Calvin C. Jones, member of TUAHOF Class of 1974, pass away

Calvin JonesCalvin C. Jones, member of inaugural Class of 1974, passed away this week in Atlanta, GA at the age of 95.

Mr. Jones was a outstanding basketball player while attending Tuskegee Institute. Mr. Jones graduated from Tuskegee in 1948 and went on to have an outstanding coaching career.

He was a member of the Tuskegee University Hall of Fame, SIAC Sports Hall of Fame and the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame.

David Ogletree, TUAHOF 2017, pass away

David OgletreeDavid Ogletree transitioned on Monday, July 12, 2021. Mr. Ogletree was a native of Detroit, Michigan and a member of the 2017 Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame Class.

Mr. Ogletree was a 1981 Communication Arts graduate of Tuskegee University. David was an outstanding receiver on the Golden Tigers Football team from 1976-1980.

The TUAHOF acknowledge the Ogletree family and offer our sincere condolences and prayers.

TUAHOF Class of 2022 Announced

TUSKEGEE, AL — The Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of eleven individuals for Enshrinement into the Tuskegee University Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2022 Class includes ten former Tuskegee student-athletes and one coach.

The 2022 Enshrinement Weekend will be scheduled during the first home football game of the 2022 season. The re-scheduling of the 2022 Enshrinement Weekend from 2021 was necessary because of COVID-19 concerns. 

To capture the enshrinement event and provide support to inductees and the Hall of Fame mission, a souvenir journal will be prepared. The souvenir journal will allow family, friends, colleagues and the business community to acknowledge the honoree’s achievements and to express appreciation for the many ways they have touched your life. 

The eleven inductees are:

Inductees were selected from nominations received by Dec. 31, 2020.

The Selection Committee evaluate nominations based on the following criteria:

  • Made exceptional contributions to the sport(s) they are being nominated by earning at least one letter and other awards appropriate to the sport.
  • Direct, consistent and current financial support to university within 5 years prior to the submission of application.
  • Graduate of Tuskegee University or graduate of some other university
    (4-year degree) for at least 10 years prior to nomination.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through professional accomplishments.
  • Community service exhibited.
